Cavity nesting birds like chickadees, wrens, and nuthatches as well as some sparrows and juncos can use roosting boxes during fall and winter. Roosting boxes are designed to have fewer ventilation holes and an entrance hole near the bottom of the box to help conserve and trap heat. Inside the box are three staggered dowels for perching, and some woodchips to be spread in the bottom of the box for added warmth.
Roosting boxes should be placed in a sheltered spot with the entrance hole facing away from wind if possible. Unlike nest boxes, roosting boxes can be painted darker colours to help absorb and retain heat during the day.
