The Backyard's Swallow Wall Mount Nestbox - Oval Entrance
A 5"x5" diameter nest box for use by swallows, as well as chickadees, wrens, and nuthatches. The oval-shaped entrance hole keeps House Sparrows from taking over the box while still allowing swallows and smaller birds to use it.
The entrance hole is roughly 5" above the floor of the box and is an oval of roughly 7/8" x 3 1/2" in size to help keep predators out and larger birds from taking over the box. Note the lack of perch, which also helps deter potential predators while still allowing the nesting birds inside.
Nest boxes should be placed in a fairly shady location, out of direct sun as much as possible. These birds like to be in open areas to allow them to swoop in and out of the box easily.
Hang boxes roughly 6 feet off the ground, around 6 to 10 feet away from any bird feeders. If you can't space it that far, make sure the entrance hole is turned away from any nearby feeders.
All Backyard cedar nest boxes have an easy access front that hinges up for easy cleaning during the winter, once nesting is complete.
