A 4"x4" diameter nest box for our most common cavity nesting birds - chickadees, wrens, and nuthatches.

The entrance hole is roughly 5" above the floor of the box and is 1 1/8" in diameter to help keep predators out and larger birds from taking over the box. Note the lack of perch, which also helps deter potential predators while still allowing the nesting birds inside.

Nest boxes should be placed in a fairly shady location, out of direct sun as much as possible. These birds like to be near, but not in, evergreens and other sheltered areas to allow them to pop quickly from the box to the bush, and back again.

Hang boxes roughly 6 feet off the ground, around 6 to 10 feet away from any bird feeders. If you can't space it that far, make sure the entrance hole is turned away from any nearby feeders.
