For hanging above your existing hummingbird feeder to prevent ants from climbing down into it. Fill about 3/4 full of water. In especially warm weather you can add a small amount of vegetable oil, which creates a film on top of the water and can help slow down evaporation.

Ant moats can also be used as temporary water sources for small birds like nuthatches, who do enjoy drinking out of them on occasion.
